Since we spend up to a third of our life in bed, our bedding gets more use than all other household textiles. Comforters, bedspreads and quilts add both beauty and comfort to our homes. With proper care you can extend their life and prevent problems caused by allergens and dust mites.
Whenever possible it is best to protect your bedding. Duvet covers are great for down comforters, adding style and protection. You can clean the duvet cover frequently and thus clean down comforters less frequently. For decorative polyester filled comforters that aren’t meant to be used with duvet covers it is best to clean them at least twice a year.
When caring for comforters, bedspreads and quilts always follow the recommended care instructions. Never machine wash a comforter that has a “dry clean only” care label, make sure to bring these to LaFrance to receive expert care. For those items that are machine washable, LaFrance also has the equipment and expertise to ensure they are cared for properly and will look their best.
If you would like to wash your own bedding, here are a few simple tips that will make sure you get the best results:
- Always use a large, front-loading commercial capacity washer for large comforters and bedding. Never use washing machines with agitators; they are too aggressive and will wear on the seams and baffles. If you have access to Express Washers, such as the ones at our Cornersburg Super Laundry Center, the gentle washing and high extract speed will ensure your comforters are clean and will minimize drying time.
- Use a gentle, low-sudsing detergent and remember that less is more. If you use too much detergent it will not rinse out completely and may end up with soap residue that will attract dirt and may cause irritation.
- Dry your bedding in a large, commercial-sized dryer at medium heat. Periodically reposition the comforter so that it dries evenly. It is very important to dry down comforters thoroughly; otherwise they could develop mold and smell bad.
